ENERGY COSTS GOING UP AGAIN

Anouncement on the news today that Electricity and Gas prices will be going up from the 1st of August in the UK. The increases are 10% and 19% respectively and the talk is about how many pensioners will struggle to to keep up with payments and some having to make a choice with either heating or eating. What a sad state of affairs, what is the world coming to????

Torrevieja

I agree with you 100% we were thinking of going back to the U.K until we heard the news yesterday about the cost of fuel and then later we heard that inflation was also going up, we may not be as happy as we would have liked to have been living in Spain as we are missing family but at least we can pay our bills and will be warm this winter.

Commented Dawn in La Marina 2011-06-08 09:14:26 UTC

We left the UK for precisely this reason, everything continues to go up and these energy companies are making extortionate profits and are being allowed to get away with it. Do they not realise we are in a deep recession and the average person cannot afford these constant increases. I am so glad to be here in Spain.

WOULD YOU LIVE IN SPAIN

I have been asked by some friends of mine back in the U.K if I think that should come to Spain to live as life for them at the moment is very hard. The problem is I do not think that I can give them a correct answer as my situation is not the same as their's. I do not need to work and have no mortgage to pay, they are a lot younger than me and will have to rent and find work, as well as having a child that has to go to school.

Could anyway give advise as to what life would be like for them and would they stand a chance of getting started in Spain.

Quesada

I think you only need to look around here at the age group they sound to be in and how many of that age group have gone back to the UK. There are properties here to rent (although I think some of the rents people want are ridiculous) but work is extremely hard to find here, whether you speak Spanish or not. The only people that I know (and I am thinking about the sort of 25-45 age group) who seem to manage okay here are those who either have an online business that can be run from here or those whose husbands work in the UK or abroad (ie on oil rigs etc). The work situation here is more dire than in the UK. What do they do for a living and would they come with a lump sum behind them? I dont want to sound down on Spain as obviously I live here and love the lifestyle for us and the children but its not easy - you have the same stresses and worries as you do in the UK.

Its about meeting their needs at the end of the day, so what do the family want from this ?

Are they happy to just get by with the added bonus of a warmer climate or do they have dreams and aspirations to make something happen for them over here.

If its just geography and theyr'e running away from a poor lifestyle in England then it is unlikley that there needs will be met. However if theyre in it for the long haul and are confident they can do something with their lives then I say go for it because depending upon their circumstances in england, what exactly have they got to loose and I say that with a genuine heart.

A friend of mine moved into a flat in the area 3 years ago with nothing but her family allowance/ child benefits being transferred over. The odds were against her but she had drive and determination, it hasnt been easy but shes got a nice life now and so have her kids who are all fluent in spanish, totally integrated into the spanish way of life and happy, not millionaires at all but getting by and enjoying their lives. They dont really have more than they did before in terms of money but their quaility of life has rocketed.

Like I say its about meeting a need but hey if they can come over and survive these economically challenged days then imagine how it will be for them when things pick up.

In the final analysis you cant decide for them, you can only give them the benefit and knowledge of your own experience

I wish them luck what ever they decide !
